Staff Full Stack Software Engineer

Affirm is seeking a Staff Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Acquisition & Onboarding team within the Consumer organization. This is a high-impact leadership role for an engineer who can set technical direction, drive architectural decisions, and elevate the quality and velocity of full stack development across mobile, web, and backend systems. The team plays a critical role in shaping the first experience customers have with Affirm—building trust, clarity, and value from the very first interaction. As a Staff Engineer, you will be responsible for defining long-term technical strategy, mentoring senior engineers, and acting as a force multiplier through your technical depth, operational excellence, and ability to navigate ambiguity. You'll work at the intersection of product, design, and engineering to build polished, performant, and accessible user experiences that directly impact conversion, retention, and business growth. This role involves an on-call rotation as a requirement.

Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long time scale, and help your team tie it together with critical, business-impacting projects Collaborate across teams in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design & analytics to ensure technical sustainability, risks and trade-offs are well understood and managed Act as a force-multiplier for your team through definition and advocacy of technical solutions and operational processes Take ownership of your team’s operations and availability by ensuring monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing and alerting are in place to support “keep the lights on” & on-call efforts Foster a culture of quality and ownership on your team by setting code review and design standards, and advocating for them beyond your team through writing and tech talks Help develop talent on your team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example

8+ years of experience as a software engineer Proficient in designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale technologies like Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes Proficient in developing web apps using declarative UI frameworks like React, React Native or Vue Experience delivering major features, system components or deprecating existing functionality in a system through the definition of a technical and execution plan Writes high quality code that is easily understood and used by others Thrives in ambiguity, and comfortable moving from low level language idioms all the way to the architecture of large systems to understand how they work Growth and impact trajectory demonstrates mastery in gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with a global engineering team
